Many Voices United for Justice
Over 200 organizations have signed on to the Campaign for an Independent Public Defense Commission.
Governor Paterson said in a radio interview on May 22, 2008, "I like the idea of a commission."
Former New York Chief Judge Judith S. Kaye called for an overhaul and state takeover of public defense services in New York, citing "an on-going crisis" in public defense. The CIPDC seeks to implement her recommendations.
27 past presidents of the New York State Bar Association and other influential leaders (.pdf) are members of The Committee for an Independent Public Defense Commission.
The Black, Puerto Rican, Hispanic and Asian Caucus (.pdf) has expressed full support for the Commission to the Governor and Senate and Assembly leaders. The New York State Bar Association has also made establishing the Commission a priority in the Legislature.
A growing number of county legislatures, state associations, and others have passed official resolutions supporting state takeover of public defense services.
3 out of 4 New Yorkers support creating and funding an independent state agency to administer public defense, according to a Zogby poll.
